Another underdog continues to make good

Kenny Rogers. "He's capable of that" said Joe Torre, when he shut down the Yankees. How much worse off would we have been to have kept him, knowing his potential. Then again, we might not have given him the help he needed to do what he was capable of -- and what does that say about us. Sounds a little like the story of another favorite underdog, Jeff Weaver. Both had good games in Game One of the World Series. I wish they hadn't had to pitch against each other.

I too regret that Weaver and Rogers had to compete face to face. So often Dreamweaver seems to come out on the losing end of match-ups like that, but he did well. I hope that's not forgotten. Immediately after the game I saw a headline saying -- not that the battle was tough or that both men with challenging temperments did well -- but that Weaver finally hit trouble, as if it were inevitable during this Series, the writer poised waiting.
